Glen Manor House History
The history of the Glen Manor house is an inspiring one that started in the 1880s. H.A.C Taylor, a homeowner in Newport and New York City, began to buy farmlands in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, due to his love for the country life. His first purchase was 111 acres in the area already known as “The Glen.” At the end of 1909, Taylor and his Son had already acquired 700 acres in Portsmouth.
After H.A.C Taylor moved from Newport to Portsmouth to take up residence on the Glen Farm, he decided to build a standard home for Taylor’s family. In the 1920’s he hired the world-renowned architect John Russel Pope – who had made the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC among other significant buildings – to create the design for his home. The plan was completed in September 1921, and Pope modeled the project after the famous French Petit Trianon at Versailles, a unique design in Portsmouth.
Taylor died in May 1921, but his son, Moses, continued the work thanks to his interest in the gardens and the house plan. The construction was completed in 1923, with the house boasting a magnificent landscape and incredible garden having a unique Italian design. Moses lived there with his wife till he died in 1928, and his wife died in 1959.
Reginald Taylor, the son of Moses, eventually sold the Mansion and 43 acres to the Sisters of Sacred Heart, who moved their school there. In 1972, the school closed down, and The Glen Manor house was purchased by the Town of Portsmouth based on the bond issue. This led to the Glen Manor House Authority (a group of volunteers) who now manages, maintains, and improves the house to the stunning special functions venue we all know today.
