History of Glen Magna Farms
The Glen Magna Farms has a beautiful history of over 200 years. In 1812, the wealthiest Salem shipping merchant of the time, Joseph Peabody, purchased a twenty-acre Danvers property. This property contained a house popularly known as a dwelling perfect for a gentleman’s seat. The twenty acres property was later increased to over three hundred acres, and it served as the summer retreat for the Peabody family.
In 1893 Ellen Peabody Endicott hired a well-known Boston architectural firm, Browne Moore, to develop a mansion expansion design. The expansion of the Mansion coupled with the further embellishment of the grounds gave it a classic colonial revival form.
The Farm won the HunnewellGold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society due to the rare and vital ornamental trees and shrubs it housed. The Farm continued to gather attention as Ellen Peabody’s son, William Crowninshield Endicott, brought the Derby Summer House to the property in 1901. The Summer House has continued featuring on the list of Historic Landmarks since 1968.
The Glen Magna Farms journey to become the wedding and event venue we know today started in 1963 when the Danvers Historical Society acquired eleven central acres to the property. Ever since they have continued to improve the gardens, it exemplifies the golden age of American gardens. At the same time, they have added more modern elegance to compliment the already impressive natural beauty of the Farm.
The Glen Magna Farms have won some notable awards in recent times, especially as a wedding venue, notably the “WeddingWire couples’ choice award” from 2015 to 2019, which shows the consistency with which it has continued wow couples.
